In the world of film production, location can make or break your budget. Production incentives—offered by jurisdictions across the U.S. and Canada—help keep costs in check by providing tax benefits that encourage filming in-state. Since the 1990s, these incentives have grown increasingly competitive, as states vie to attract filmmakers and keep productions local. That’s where XR Extreme Reach comes in, offering top-tier expertise in navigating the complex landscape of Production Incentives. The platform is centered on a map visualization that shows every U.S. and Canadian jurisdiction offering an incentive, making it easier than ever for producers to choose the right location.

We love movies. It’s easy to see how much goes into production, but we didn’t realize how important location was—how “above the line” and “below the line” costs or rebate incentives could shape every decision. The magic of UX design is how deeply you have to dive in to understand what you’re creating. For a little while there, we felt like movie (production incentive) stars ourselves.

Creating a map might seem simple, but mapping out film production incentives is anything but. Across the U.S., each state offers different incentives, and some cities have their own unique perks—even in states without statewide programs. It’s a complex patchwork of possibilities that requires careful design to navigate.

From the start, we had three design goals: First, to capture all the current incentive information and make it easy to update in the future. Second, to create a presence on ER's website that would let customers know we offer incentive support. And third, to design a map that's not only more attractive but also easier to use than our competitors'.
